International Field School on Site Formation, Stratigraphy, and Geoarchaeology in Ancient Corinth 

The Malcolm H. Wiener Laboratory for Archaeological Science (ASCSA) in collaboration with the ASCSA Excavations at Ancient Corinth offers a full week-long Field School on Site Formation, Stratigraphy, and Geoarchaeology at Ancient Corinth. Dr. Panagiotis (Takis) Karkanas, director of the Wiener Laboratory and Paul Goldberg, Professorial Research Fellow University of Wollongong, will supervise the intensive field school. Registered students will participate in the Corinth excavation and will be involved primarily in interdisciplinary field research focused on archaeological context, geoarchaeology, and material sciences. Through field observations, on-site laboratory analysis, and lectures, the students will receive instruction in the study and analysis of archaeological sediments and deposits, as well as gain experience in the recording of stratigraphy, and the understanding site formation processes. A maximum of 12 students will be accepted for the course. Preference is given to advanced students and post-docs with a background in archaeology, and preferably some exposure to the natural sciences as well.

The cost for Room and Board is 300 euros for the entire week. Travel costs to Greece and to the site are not included.

The course will take place from June 16 to 23, 2018. Applications should be sent no later than 30th April to [email protected]. They should include one paragraph explaining why the candidate is interested in participating in the course, a CV, a list of grades (unofficial transcript), and names and email addresses of two referees. Participants who successfully complete the course of instruction will receive a certificate detailing the content of the field school.

Textbooks: Practical and Theoretical Geoarchaeology 2006 by Paul Goldberg and Richard I. Macphail (Blackwell) and Microarchaeology 2010 by Stephen Weiner (Cambridge University Press).

A syllabus will be emailed 3 weeks before the start of the field school.

Achill Archaeological Field School Scholarship 2018 @ Achill Archaeological Field School

For the first time in 2018 Achill Archaeological Field School will offer two $2000 scholarships for any of our 6-week or 12-week accredited excavation courses (Excavations and Recording 1, 2, or 7). The bursaries, which can be offset against course fees, aim to support students in their field school journey of discovery.

Application

  • Applicants for the scholarship should submit a 500 word statement outlining why they wish to study at the Achill Archaeological Field School accompanied by a CV.
  • Students must have applied and completed enrolment at the Achill Archaeological Field School before the scholarship deadline of April 30, 2018.
  • Applications should be sent to [email protected] with subject title ‘Scholarship’.

Place of Study

The study will be taken at Achill Archaeological Field School, Dooagh, Achill Island, Co. Mayo, Ireland.

Scholarship Immersion Arabic in the Nation’s Capital

 

Sabla is an intensive language and cultural immersion program for American undergraduate and graduate students. For five weeks each summer, students from across the US can study Arabic at SQCC on scholarship.

The word Sabla in Omani Arabic dialect refers to a place in each community where people gather and receive hospitality. Sabla also serves as a meeting place to discuss important public issues.

The Sabla program aspires to be a hub bringing together students from across the U.S. for a dynamic linguistic and cultural exchange. The program hopes to enable students to be active learners and to form a community to cultivate a lifelong Arabic language learning experience.

The Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center’s Sabla Program is an intensive summer language program designed to benefit current university-level students and recent graduates. The program offers courses at four different levels: Advanced Beginning, Low Intermediate, High Intermediate and Advanced. The program emphasizes the instruction of Modern Standard Arabic or MSA (fusha).

The MSA program runs for four weeks offering highly intensive course work in Arabic. Classes run from Monday to Thursday, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.Experienced instructors use a proficiency-based approach that emphasizes all five skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar. Arabic is the main language of instruction. Classes are held in technologically advanced classrooms. The program offers formal instruction in a language that is enriched by immersion in an authentic cultural context. Cultural activities include weekly lectures on topics related to Arab history, society, and culture with a special focus on Oman.

The program is highly demanding. As such, students are expected to be totally committed to attending classes and doing homework on a daily basis. The typical daily workload in the Sabla program entails 4 hours of classroom instruction and a minimum of 2 to 3 hours of homework.

All applicants are required to have completed at least two semesters of Arabic at a college or university in the United States by the start of the program. This exam, together with the information to be provided in the application about the student’s knowledge of Arabic and the required Arabic writing sample will determine the level of Arabic instruction appropriate for the applicant.

The program also includes:

  • Integrated weekly cultural events, including music presentation and movie screenings
  • Attending lectures conducted in Arabic featuring guest speakers
  • Trips to acquaint students with the magnificent Middle Eastern heritage on display in museums and libraries across DC
  • Visits to Middle Eastern restaurants

Fees
This academic scholarship covers the cost of classes only. Students will be responsible to pay for their airfare ticket to DC, accommodation, and food, excursions (most museums in DC are free to the public) and any other miscellaneous living expenses for the duration of their stay in DC

Textbooks
Students are required to purchase textbooks. Additional teaching materials will be supplied by instructors at no cost to students.

Insurance
All insurance coverage including medical, life, accident etc. is the responsibility of the student. Please note that students will be required provide proof of valid medical insurance with their application.

Accommodation
Students must make their own arrangements at a hotel, hostel, or private home in DC. Reservations should be made in advance before arriving to DC for class. SQCC does not provide housing.

second call for applications is now open for the Archaeological School in Abruzzo (Italy)-summer program 2018 of University of Pisa.

The Archaeological Summer School in Abruzzo  is a four-week course offered by the University of Pisa in collaboration with the Soprintendenza  Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio dell’Abruzzo and with the important support of other research centers for the archaeological studies: University of Foggia,  ICCOM-CNR U.O.S. of Pisa and INGV of Rome.

The aim of our course is to increase awareness and competencies about archaeological and methodological issues through an intensive four weeks program of lectures, laboratory experience and field activity.

The program represent a new approach in studying and understanding ancient civilizations and offers its participants a diachronic (multi-period) approach to the study of archaeology. This year the school gives the opportunity to learn and work in three different excavations sites  where student will gain the skill and a deeper knowledge of the archaeology from the prehistoric to the roman period.

  • The school will take place in the area of Fucino (Abruzzo) from July 8th to August 4th 2018.
  • The registration deadline is May 10, 2018.
  • Each participant will earn 10 undergraduate credits and a certificate of participation through the University of Pisa.
  • Costs includes all the school activities, accommodation and meals.
