Call for Papers: CSAS Annual Meeting

Faculty, students, independent scholars, and practitioners are encouraged to submit abstracts for papers, posters, organized sessions, workshops, and round-tables in all fields of anthropology, including applied, for the 96th Anniversary Meeting of the Central States Anthropological Society, which will be held at the Embassy Suites in Lincoln, Nebraska, April 6 through April 8, 2017.

The annual CSAS conference is student-friendly and features a paper competition for both undergraduate and graduate students (go to Awards page for more information). It  offers an opportunity for anthropologists from throughout the Midwest, from institutions large and small, to meet, talk, and network in a welcoming and professional environment.

This year’s conference will offer two extraordinary plenary talks.  The 2016 Distinguished Lecture will be given by Dr. Fred Smith. And a second special plenary address will be given by Dr. Richard Lee.

You must register for the conference before you can submit an abstract.  If your abstract is not accepted, you can ask for a refund of your registration fee.

This year, the registration rates for CSAS members have been reduced.  So if you are a member of AAA, join CSAS for $20 ($10 for students) and you’ll save on registration!

Registration rates:  Early online registration rates are:  CSAS regular member: $50; CSAS student member: $20; regular non-member: $90; student non-member: $40. (After March 6th the on-site registration rates are:  CSAS regular member: $70; CSAS student member: $30;regular non-member: $110; student non-member: $50.)

All meeting participants are welcome to attend the business lunch; the subsidized ticket price is $8.

To submit an abstract:  Once you register (and pay fees), you will receive a registration confirmation email from aaameetings with a link to the submissions website. THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS IS December 15, 2016.

CFP: Panel on Victor and Edith Turner for 2017 AAA Meeting

We are organizing a panel exploring the many contributions of Victor and Edith Turner to anthropology for the 2017 Meeting of the American Anthropological Association, to be held November 29 through December 3 at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, D.C. Papers are sought on any of the major areas to which they have contributed, including the history of anthropology, pilgrimage, the study of the paranormal, liminality, humanistic anthropology, dramaturgy and anthropology or any of the other areas of their work. Their influence has been great and has continued into the present. Please, contact either Frank A. Cambridge Scholars Press is interested in publishing the papers from the session.

28th Annual Thinking Gender Graduate Student Research Conference

The UCLA Center for the Study of Women invites submissions of paper, poster, speed pitching research roundtable, and visual arts proposals for our 28th Annual Thinking Gender Graduate Student Research Conference. This year’s conference theme, Pre-existing Conditions, will focus on the interactions of health and gender as a play on the current, on-going discussions about gender-focused health and healthcare. Pre-existing Conditions invites conversations about the directions and foci of intersectional and multi-contextual approaches to health and well-being. With our focus on gender and health, Thinking Gender 2018, Pre-existing Conditions, welcomes submissions of graduate student projects on a wide range of health and health-related topics (see the attached call or visit http://csw.ucla.edu/TG18CFP for details).

Deadline for All Proposal Submissions: November 1, 2017

We invite proposal submissions for the following categories:

Registered graduate students from any institution are eligible to submit presentation proposals for all Thinking Gender sessions, including the panel, poster, speed pitching research roundtable, and Visual Arts Reception & Exhibition sessions.

Registered undergraduate students from any institution are eligible to submit proposals for poster presentations and participation in the Visual Arts Reception & Exhibition only.

To participate in Thinking Gender, successful applicants will be required to pay a registration fee of $50, the entirety of which will go towards covering conference costs. Participants for whom the registration fee is prohibitive are encouraged to contact [email protected].

Deadlines

The deadline for all submission proposals is November 1, 2017. Submissions must be made online via the link at http://csw.ucla.edu/TG18CFP. Once submissions are reviewed and accepted, all participants in the paper panel sessions will be required to submit a draft of their paper by January 29, 2018, for pre-circulation among their co-panelists and faculty moderator.

African Critical Inquiry Programme Call for Proposals to Organize a Workshop

The African Critical Inquiry Programme invites proposals from scholars and/or practitioners in public cultural institutions in South Africa to organize a workshop to take place in 2019. The African Critical Inquiry Programme (ACIP) seeks to advance inquiry and debate about the roles and practice of public culture, public cultural institutions and public scholarship in shaping identities and society in Africa.

ACIP Workshops are intended as annual occasions to identify and address critical themes, fundamental questions and pressing practical issues concerning public culture. For instance, Workshops might focus on particular notions and issues related to publics, visuality, museums and exhibitions, art, performance, representational or institutional forms from methodological, practical, and theoretical vantages. They might examine forms and practices of public scholarship and the theories, histories and systems of thought that shape and illuminate public culture and public scholarship. Workshops should encourage comparative, interdisciplinary and cross-institutional interchange and reflection that brings into conversation public scholarship in Africa, creative cultural production, and critical theory. Workshop budgets will vary depending on proposed plans; the maximum award is ZAR 60,000.

Applications may be submitted by experienced scholars and cultural practitioners based in universities, museums, and other cultural organizations in South Africa who are interested in creating or reinvigorating interdisciplinary, cross-institutional engagement and understanding and who are committed to training the next generations of scholar-practitioners. Applications may be submitted by a single individual or a pair of individuals who have different institutional affiliations and bring different perspectives, approaches or specializations to the proposed Workshop theme.

Expanding Cooperation on Migration: People, Economy, and Security in the Unites States, Mexico and Canada

Longstanding migration flows to and through North America are changing. Shifts in patterns—both driving policy change and responding to it—require fresh thinking across borders. Around the world, proliferating crises have increased the number of refugees and asylum seekers on the move, triggering enhanced border security and vetting protocols in many countries. Within North America, a well-worn north-bound migration pattern is complemented by an increasing southward flow to Mexico and beyond. This stream comprises both those who voluntarily migrate and those being repatriated. And within each North American country, there appear growing concerns about the capacity to receive and integrate new arrivals. Publics unevenly perceive the social and economic benefits of migration and question the government’s ability to effectively manage it. At the same time, under NAFTA, North America has seen reduced barriers to trade, investment and cross-border movement of goods and services. However, the agreement is currently under a contentious renegotiation among the three countries. While migration is not a core NAFTA issue, changes or outright cancellation of the agreement could have migration effects.

The second annual Metropolis North America policy forum builds on the foundational understanding gained at the inaugural forum in Washington, and seeks to identify areas where cooperation is occurring, possible and/or desired. Amidst the backdrop of shifting migration patterns and evolving relationships, approaches can benefit from imagination and should consider actors beyond national governments, including subnational levels and other sectors of society. The key aim of the Mexico City forum is to explore where expanded cooperation across the continent on migration can both promote security and grow the economy in all three countries. Building on innovative approaches and ideas, organizers will seek to bolster a North American migration research agenda that can support these opportunities with insight and analysis from a continental perspective.

All sessions must have bilateral or trilateral participation from the United States, Mexico and/or Canada.
Workshops (90 minutes):

Workshops will usually consist of four to a maximum of 5 presentations of approximately 15 minutes each followed by at least 20 minutes of discussion. Workshop coordinators will preside over the session or designate another individual to do so.

Roundtables (90 minutes):

The roundtable format is suitable for more informal discussions of emerging issues or to unpack controversial topics. It is a very effective format for the exchange of information and experiences among a relatively small number of people. The organizer or designated person chairs the roundtable with bi/tri national discussants. An 8 person limit per roundtable discussion is recommended because of the desire to actively engage all participants in the session and the physical arrangement of the tables around which the discussions will take place.

  • 50-word abstract which will be included in the program (please make sure it is descriptive, but is also formulated to interest as many conference participants as possible)
