Honoring Service in promoting Public Understanding of Science and Engineering

THE NATIONAL SCIENCE BOARD HAS EXTENDED THE DEADLINE FOR NOMINATIONS FOR ITS 2018 HONORARY AWARDS UNTIL OCTOBER 10, 2017.

The National Science Board is pleased to accept nominations for the Public Service Award, which honors individuals and groups that have made substantial contributions to increasing public understanding of science and engineering in the United States. These contributions may be in a wide variety of areas that have the potential of contributing to public understanding of and appreciation for science and engineering—including mass media, education and/or training programs, and entertainment.

ELIGIBILITY AND SELECTION CRITERIA

Candidates for the NSB Public Service Award should have demonstrated outstanding leadership and accomplishment in meeting the following selection criteria:

  • Increased the public’s understanding of the processes of science and engineering through scientific discovery, innovation, and its communication to the public.
  • Encouraged others to help raise the public understanding of science and technology.
  • Promoted the engagement of scientists and engineers in public outreach and scientific literacy.
  • Contributed to the development of broad science and engineering policy and its support.
  • Influenced and encouraged the next generation of scientists and engineers.
  • Achieved broad recognition outside of the candidate’s area of specialization.
  • Fostered awareness of science and technology among broad segments of the population.

Please note that Members of the US Government are not eligible for this award.

NOMINATION GUIDELINES

Nominations for an individual must include:

  1. A current curriculum vita without publications (no more than 3 pages).
  2. A narrative statement (no more than 5 pages) addressing the following:
    1. the candidate’s public service activities in science and engineering, and
    2. the candidate’s contributions to public understanding of science and engineering, as they relate to the selection criteria.
  3. Contact information of candidate and nominator (mailing address, email address, phone number).

Nominations for a group must include:

  1. A narrative statement (no more than 5 pages) addressing the following:
    1. the group’s activities, and how it accomplishes the selection criteria for the award,
    2. length of years of the program,
    3. number and type of individuals served by the group’s activities; and
    4. data on the success of the program (if available).
  2. Contact information of candidate and nominator (mailing address, email address, phone number).

Reference letters are optional, and up to 3 letters (no more than to 2 pages each) may be submitted on letterhead as a PDF file.

THE NATIONAL SCIENCE BOARD HAS EXTENDED THE DEADLINE FOR NOMINATIONS FOR ITS 2018 HONORARY AWARDS UNTIL OCTOBER 10, 2017.

Vannevar Bush Award

The National Science Board is pleased to accept nominations for the Vannevar Bush Award. The Vannevar Bush Award honors truly exceptional lifelong leaders in science and technology who have made substantial contributions to the welfare of the Nation through public service activities in science, technology, and public policy. The award was established in 1980 in the memory of Vannevar Bush, who served as a science advisor to President Franklin Roosevelt during World War II, helped to establish Federal funding for science and engineering as a national priority during peacetime, and was behind the creation of the National Science Foundation.

ELIGIBILITY AND SELECTION CRITERIA

Candidates for the Vannevar Bush Award should have demonstrated outstanding leadership and accomplishment in meeting at least two of the following selection criteria:

  • Candidates must be US citizens.
  • Distinguished himself/herself through public service activities in science and technology.
  • Pioneered the exploration, charting, and settlement of new frontiers in science, technology, education, and public service.
  • Demonstrated leadership and creativity that have inspired others to distinguished careers in science and technology.
  • Contributed to the welfare of the Nation and mankind through activities in science and technology.
  • Demonstrated leadership and creativity that has helped mold the history of advancements in the Nation’s science, technology, and education.

NOMINATION GUIDELINES

Nominations must include:

  1. A current curriculum vita without publications (no more than 5 pages).
  2. A narrative statement (no more than 8 pages) addressing the candidate’s activities and contributions related to the selection criteria.
  3. A proposed award citation addressing the candidate’s activities in and contributions to national public service activities in science, technology, and public policy.
  4. Contact information for award candidate and nominator (mailing address, email address, and phone number).
  5. Two reference letters (no more than 2 pages each) from individuals familiar with the candidate’s accomplishments, and not affiliated with the candidate’s home institution. Letters should be submitted by email to [email protected] on letterhead as a PDF file.

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: IVAN KARP DOCTORAL RESEARCH AWARDS FOR AFRICAN STUDENTS ENROLLED IN SOUTH AFRICAN PhD PROGRAMMES

The African Critical Inquiry Programme is pleased to announce the 2018 Ivan Karp Doctoral Research Awards to support African doctoral students in the humanities and humanistic social sciences who are enrolled at South African universities and conducting dissertation research on relevant topics. Grant amounts vary depending on research plans, with a maximum award of ZAR 40,000.

The African Critical Inquiry Programme (ACIP) seeks to advance inquiry and debate about the roles and practice of public culture, public cultural institutions and public scholarship in shaping identities and society in Africa. The ACIP is committed to collaboration between scholars and the makers of culture/history, and to fostering inquiry into the politics of knowledge production, the relationships between the colonial/apartheid and the postcolonial/postapartheid, and the importance of critical pluralism as against nationalist discourse. ACIP is a partnership between the Centre for Humanities Research at the University of the Western Cape and the Laney Graduate School of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia (USA).

ELIGIBILITY: The Ivan Karp Doctoral Research Awards are open to African postgraduate students (regardless of citizenship) in the humanities and humanistic social sciences. Applicants must be currently registered in a PhD programme in a

South African university and be working on topics related to ACIP’s focus. Awards will support doctoral research projects focused on topics such as institutions of public culture, particular aspects of museums and exhibitions, forms and practices of public scholarship, culture and communication, and the theories, histories and systems of thought that shape and illuminate public culture and public scholarship.

Applicants must submit a dissertation proposal that has been approved by their institution to confirm the award; this must be completed before they begin ACIP- supported on-site research or by December 2018, whichever comes first.

APPLICATION PROCESS: Awards are open to proposals working with a range of methodologies in the humanities and humanistic social sciences, including research in archives and collections, fieldwork, interviews, surveys, and quantitative data collection. Applicants are expected to write in clear, intelligible prose for a selection committee that is multi-disciplinary and cross-regional. Proposals should show thorough knowledge of the major concepts, theories, and methods in the applicant’s discipline and in other related fields and include a bibliography relevant to the research. Applicants should specify why an extended period of on-site research is essential to successfully complete the proposed doctoral dissertation. To apply, eligible applicants should submit the following as a single file attachment with documents in the order listed:

  • completed cover sheet (form below and online at  http://www.gs.emory.edu/about/special/acip.html)
  • abstract of the proposed research project (250 words maximum)
  •  research proposal outlining the project’s goals, central questions, significance, and relevance for ACIP’s central concerns. Proposals should include a clearly formulated, realistic research design and plan of work responsive to the project’s theoretical and methodological concerns. Applicants should provide evidence of appropriate training to undertake the proposed research, including the language fluency necessary for the project. Proposals should be no longer than 5 pages; they should be double spaced, with one inch margins and a font no smaller than 11 point. Applications that do not follow this format will not be considered.
  • bibliography of up to two additional pages
  • project budget listing and justifying project expenses to be supported by the award
  • your curriculum vitae
  • current transcript
  • two referee letters; one of these must be from your supervisor. Your referees should comment specifically on your proposed project, its quality and significance, and your qualifications for undertaking it. They might also evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of your project and how you and your work would benefit from receiving the research award. Referee letters should be submitted directly to the selection committee.

 

Funding is to be used for on-site dissertation research; research cannot be at the applicant’s home institution unless that institution has necessary site-specific research holdings not otherwise available to the applicant. Applicants who have completed significant funded dissertation research by the start of their proposed ACIP research may be ineligible to apply to extend research time. Eligibility will be at the discretion of the ACIP Selection Committee, depending on completed research time and funding. Please note that the Ivan Karp Doctoral Research Awards support dissertation research only and may not be used for dissertation write-up, tuition, study at other universities, conference participation, or to reimburse debts or expenses for research already completed. The programme does not accept applications from PhD programmes in Law, Business, Medicine, Nursing, or Journalism, nor does it accept applications in doctoral programmes that do not lead to a PhD.

SELECTION PROCESS: Applications will be reviewed by the ACIP Selection Committee, an interdisciplinary group of scholars and practitioners drawn from a range of universities and cultural institutions. Selection will be based on the merit and strength of the application. Award amounts will vary according to project needs; the maximum award is ZAR 40,000. Awards will be made only if applications of high quality are received.

Notification of awards will be made by late July.

Successful applicants will be required to attend the African Critical Inquiry Workshop in the following year and will have opportunities to consult with scholars associated with the Workshop. They will be expected to attend subsequent ACIP Workshops while completing their dissertations, if possible. After completing their research, applicants must submit a final research report and a financial report.

Students who receive an Ivan Karp Doctoral Research Award from the African Critical Inquiry Programme must acknowledge the support in any publications resulting from the research and in their dissertation. When the dissertation is completed, they must deposit a copy with the African Critical Inquiry Programme at the Center for Humanities Research.

 

Closing date: Applications and referees’ letters must be received on or before Tuesday 1 May 2018. Incomplete applications and applications that do not conform to format guidelines will not be considered.

2019–20 ACOR Fellowships, Scholarships, and Awards

NEH Fellowship: One award of six months for scholars who have a Ph.D. or have completed their professional training. Fields of research may include: modern and classical languages, linguistics, literature, history, jurisprudence, philosophy, archaeology, comparative religion, ethics, and the history, criticism, and theory of the arts. Social and political scientists are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or foreign nationals living in the U.S. three years immediately preceding the application deadline. The award for six months is $25,200. Awards must be used between May 15, 2019 and June 30, 2020. This is a residential fellowship and residency at ACOR is required.

ACOR-CAORC Post-Doctoral Fellowship: Two or more two- to six-month fellowships for post-doctoral scholars and scholars with a terminal degree in their field, pursuing research or publication projects in the natural and social sciences, humanities, and associated disciplines relating to the Middle East. U.S. citizenship required. Maximum award is $32,400. Awards must be used between June 15, 2019 and December 31, 2020. Funding for this fellowship provided by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. This is a residential fellowship and residency at ACOR is required.

ACOR-CAORC Fellowship: Two or more two- to six-month fellowships for masters and doctoral students. Fields of study include all areas of the humanities and the natural and social sciences. Topics should contribute to scholarship in Middle Eastern studies. U.S. citizenship required. Maximum award is $23,800. Awards must be used between June 15, 2019 and December 31, 2020. Funding for this fellowship provided by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. This is a residential fellowship and residency at ACOR is required.

Jennifer C. Groot Memorial Fellowship: Up to three awards of $1,500 each to support beginners in archaeological fieldwork who have been accepted as team members on archaeological projects with ASOR/CAP affiliation in Jordan. Open to undergraduate or graduate students of U.S. or Canadian citizenship as well as individuals who graduated less than 12 months before February 1, 2019 and/or have been accepted to a Graduate program for Fall 2019.

Bert and Sally de Vries FellowshipOne award of $1,500 to support a student for participation on an archaeological project or for research in Jordan. Senior project staff members whose expenses are being borne largely by the project are ineligible. Open to enrolled undergraduate or graduate students of any nationality except Jordanian citizens.

Harrell Family Fellowship: One award of $2,000 to support a graduate student for participation on an archaeological project or for research in Jordan. Senior project staff members whose expenses are being borne largely by the project are ineligible. Open to enrolled graduate students of any nationality except Jordanian citizens.

Pierre and Patricia Bikai Fellowship: Two awards for one month each or one two-month award for residency at ACOR in Amman. It is open to enrolled graduate students of any nationality, except Jordanian, who are participating in an archaeological project or conducting archaeological work in Jordan. The fellowship includes room and board at ACOR and a monthly stipend of $600.

Burton MacDonald and Rosemarie Sampson Fellowship: One award for either eight weeks residency at ACOR for research in the fields of Ancient Near Eastern languages and history, archaeology, Bible studies, or comparative religion, or a travel grant to assist with participation in an archaeological field project in Jordan. The ACOR residency fellowship option includes room and board at ACOR and a monthly stipend of $400. The travel grant option provides a single payment of $2,000 to help with any project related expenses. Both options are open to enrolled undergraduate or graduate students of Canadian citizenship or landed immigrant status.

Kenneth W. Russell Fellowship: One award of $1,800 to support a graduate student participating on an archaeological project or pursuing independent research in Jordan. For the 2019–2020 cycle, the Russell fellowship is only open only to enrolled graduate students of non-Jordanian nationality.

James A. Sauer Fellowship: One award of $1,250 towards educational assistance for a Jordanian student enrolled in an archaeology or cultural heritage degree program in any country. For the 2019–2020 cycle, the Sauer fellowship is only open to enrolled graduate students of Jordanian nationality.

Frederick-Wenger Memorial FellowshipTwo awards of $1,500 to assist a Jordanian student with the cost of their education. Eligibility is not limited to a specific field of study, but preference will be given to study related to Jordan’s cultural heritage. Candidates must be Jordanian citizens and currently enrolled as undergraduate or graduate students in a Jordanian university.

Jordanian Graduate Student Scholarship: Four awards of $3,000 each to assist Jordanian graduate students with the annual costs of their academic programs during the upcoming academic year, i.e. the period May 1, 2019 through May 31, 2020. Candidates must be Jordanian citizens and currently enrolled in either a Master’s or Doctoral program in a Jordanian university. Eligibility is limited to students in programs related to Jordan’s cultural heritage (for example: archaeology, anthropology, linguistics/epigraphy, history, conservation, museum studies, and cultural resource management related issues). Awardees who demonstrate excellent progress in their programs will be eligible to apply in consecutive years.

Jordanian Travel Scholarship for ASOR Annual Meeting: Two travel scholarships of $3,500 each to assist Jordanians participating and delivering a paper at the ASOR Annual meeting in mid-November in the United States. Academic papers should be submitted through the ASOR’s website (www.asor.org/am) by February 1, 2019. Final award selection will be determined by the ASOR program committee.

Please Note: NEH, CAORC, MacDonald and Sampson (residency option), and Bikai Fellows will reside at the ACOR facility in Amman while conducting their research.
