Summer 2017 Buildings-Landscapes-Cultures Field School

This summer course provides students with an immersion experience in the field recording of the built environment and cultural landscapes and an opportunity to learn how to write history literally “from the ground up.”  The 2017 field school focuses on Sherman Park, a racially, economically and culturally diverse neighborhood known for its artist communities and active neighborhood groups. This summer we will study residential building types in this neighborhood—everyday residences, duplex and four squares, single- and multi-family units, boarded up homes, refabricated and reused homes, homes transformed into stores and workplaces, homes as works of art, homes remembered in family histories and homes in domestic worlds.

This project seeks to employ the enduring creativity of storytelling, the power of digital humanities, and depth of local knowledge to galvanize Milwaukee residents to talk about their homes as repositories of community memory, spaces of caring and markers of civic pride. Students will learn how to “read” buildings within their urban material, social, ecological and cultural contexts, create reports on historic buildings and cultural landscapes and produce multimedia documentaries.

The five-week course calendar covers a broad array of academic skills. Workshops during Week 1 will focus on photography, measured drawings, documentation and technical drawings; no prior experience is necessary. Week 2 will include archival and historical research focusing on the study of the built environment. Week 3 schedule includes workshops on oral history interviewing and digital ethnography. Week 4 is centered on mapping and archival research. Week 5 and 6 will be devoted to producing final reports and multi-media documentaries.

You may participate in this field school free as a community intern. However if you want university credits you will need to sign up for summer school classes at http://www4.uwm.edu/schedule/

The University of Alberta Anthropology Department offers a 6-week, 6-credit undergraduate/graduate Fieldschool for Ethnographic Sensibility in Belgrade, Serbia. Hone your ethnographic sensibility through attention and sensorium training methods developed in visual and dramatic arts, performance, and music. Break your perceptual habits and develop acute receptivity to the nuances of the ways people walk and argue, use things and spaces, organize their time, mix smells and tastes, sit at a table, or hail a taxi. Become a sensitive instrument for registering surprises, noting patterns in them, and transposing them into ethnographic writing, film, photography, sound, or performance. In its third year, the Fieldschool is aimed at anthropologists who want to develop their ethnographic sensibility with the particular focus on non-verbal, embodied patterns of everyday life, artists who want to explore the convergences between ethnographic and artistic training, and designers, architects, urban-planners and others interested in engaging with their practice in a culturally sensitive way. Hands-on Anthropology and Collaborative Storytelling @ VU Vrije Universiteit

Everyone has a story to tell. For anthropologists, such accounts can reveal as much about the people and societies we study as more conventional research. But the process of collecting stories in the field and retelling them in the academic arena is littered with pitfalls. How do we ensure that our subjects are fairly represented? How do we construct a culturally sensitive narrative whilst maintaining scientific validity?

Apply for the VU Amsterdam Summer School by filling out our online application form. If you apply for multiple courses, you only need to fill out the form once by selecting all courses you wish to participate in. Before applying make sure to read the General Terms and Conditions. In the online application form you will be asked to provide the following documents (no larger than 1 MB per document):

  • Motivation letter. Please make sure to describe your motivation for the specific course(s) you apply for: Why this topic? How will the course contribute to your future (academic) career?

ASCSA Summer Session

The Summer Session program of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens is a six-week session designed for those who wish to become acquainted with Greece and its major monuments, and to improve their understanding of the country’s landscape, history, literature, and culture from antiquity to the present.

The Director for the 2018 Summer Session (June 4 to July 18, 2018) is Professor Daniel B. Levine, University of Arkansas.

Eligibility: Enrollment is open to graduate and advanced undergraduate students and to high school and college instructors of classics and related subjects. Enrollment is limited to twenty participants. The language of instruction is English. Applicants who are not enrolled or teaching at English-speaking colleges, universities, or schools, are required to supply evidence of proficiency in English.

Format: The ASCSA Summer Session has provided the most extensive exposure to Greece, ancient and modern, for generations of students of Classics and related fields. It has a strong academic component with participants researching and presenting topics on site and offers unique opportunities to interact with archaeologists in the field. Roughly half of the session is spent in travel throughout Greece. Three trips of varying duration give the participant an introduction to the major archaeological sites and museum collections in North and Central Greece, the Peloponnese, and Crete. The remainder of the session is devoted to study of the museums and monuments of Athens and the surrounding area with day trips to such sites as Marathon, Sounion, and Eleusis. The Summer Session’s commitment to presenting a comprehensive view of Greece’s rich history leads to long days and extensive walking in the hot Mediterranean climate. Participants should be prepared for a rigorous program of study.

Cost: Fees for the 2018 program are $4,900. This includes tuition, room for the entire six-week period, partial board in Athens, travel within Greece, and museum and site fees. International airfare, some meals, and incidental expenses are the participant’s responsibility. Financial aid is available in the form of ASCSA scholarships, awarded on the basis of academic merit, and many classical professional organizations have funding opportunities. Call for Applications: African Critical Inquiry Programme Ivan Karp Doctoral Research Awards

FOR AFRICAN STUDENTS ENROLLED IN SOUTH AFRICAN PhD PROGRAMS

The African Critical Inquiry Programme is pleased to announce the 2018 Ivan Karp Doctoral Research Awards to support African doctoral students in the humanities and humanistic social sciences who are enrolled at South African universities and conducting dissertation research on relevant topics. Grant amounts vary depending on research plans, with a maximum award of ZAR 40,000.

The African Critical Inquiry Programme (ACIP) seeks to advance inquiry and debate about the roles and practice of public culture, public cultural institutions and public scholarship in shaping identities and society in Africa. The Ivan Karp Doctoral Research Awards are open to African postgraduate students (regardless of citizenship) in the humanities and humanistic social sciences. Applicants must be currently registered in a PhD programme in a South African university and be working on topics related to ACIP’s focus. Awards will support doctoral research projects focused on topics such as institutions of public culture, particular aspects of museums and exhibitions, forms and practices of public scholarship, culture and communication, and the theories, histories and systems of thought that shape and illuminate public culture and public scholarship. Awards are open to proposals working with a range of methodologies in the humanities and humanistic social sciences, including research in archives and collections, fieldwork, interviews, surveys, and quantitative data collection.
