THE M. ALISON FRANTZ FELLOWSHIP IN POST-CLASSICAL STUDIES AT THE GENNADIUS LIBRARY
Deadline: January 15, 2020
The M. Alison Frantz Fellowship, formerly known as the Gennadeion Fellowship in Post- Classical Studies, was named in honor of archaeologist, Byzantinist, and photographer M. Alison Frantz (1903–1995), a scholar of the post-classical Athenian Agora whose photographs of antiquities are widely used in books on Greek culture.
Fields of study: Late Antique through Modern Greek Studies, including but not limited to the Byzantine, Frankish, Post-Byzantine, and Ottoman periods.
Eligibility: Ph.D. candidates and recent Ph.D.s (up to five years) from a U.S. or Canadian institution. Candidates should demonstrate their need to work in the Gennadius Library.
Terms: A stipend of $11,500 plus room, board, and waiver of School fees. Fellows are expected to be in residence at the School for the full academic year from early September to late May. A final report is due at the end of the award period, and the ASCSA expects that copies of all publications that result from research conducted as a Fellow of the ASCSA be contributed to the Gennadius Library.

The 2020-2021 George Papaioannou Fellowship
Research in Modern Greek Political and Social History
Deadline: January 15, 2020
The George Papaioannou Fellowship was established by Mrs. Nadia Tzevelekou – Papaioannou to honor her father George Papaioannou. This fellowship is offered every other year. A doctor by training and elected to the Greek parliament in 1933, George Papaioannou was the leader of the Trichonis (in Aitolia-Acarnania) sub-division of the National Republican Greek League (EDES). After the end of the Greek Civil War, he served again as a member of the Greek Parliament and a mayor of Agrinion.
The George Papaioannou Papers housed in the Archives of the ASCSA contain material relating to the Greek Civil War, as well as information about the recognition, in 1969, of the EDES guerilla fighters’ contribution to the Greek Resistance during the Second World War. Other materials include photographs, reports by Napoleon Zervas (the leader of EDES), correspondence between Papaioannou and the decorated British saboteur Major Menotti G. Eligibility: Awarded to both senior and early career scholars – including PhD candidates – of any nationality researching Greece in the 1940’s and the post-war period, civil wars and the history of the Second World War. The fellowship is open to all areas of social science, but priority shall be given to historians and political scientists. Fellows are required to make use of and refer to the George Papaioannou Papers housed at the Archives of the Gennadius Library.
Terms: Stipend of € 2,000. To be used any period of time between July 2020 and June 2021. School fees are waived for a maximum of two months. The Fellowship does not include travel costs, housing, board, and other living expenses. The recipient should not plan to work at the Archives of the Gennadius Library during the month of August. A final report is due at the end of the award period, and the ASCSA expects that copies of all publications that result from research conducted as a Fellow of the ASCSA be contributed to the Gennadius Library.

MALCOLM H. WIENER LABORATORY
FOR ARCHAEOLOGICAL SCIENCE
POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP 2020-2023

Eligibility: The Post-Doctoral Fellowship is limited to individuals who have received their PhD within the last seven (7) years. Individuals who have received prior support as Pre-Doctoral Fellows must wait four (4) years before applying for a Post-Doctoral Fellowship. Former Research Associates must wait two (2) years before applying for a Post-Doctoral Fellowship.
Purpose: To conduct research at the Malcolm H. Wiener Laboratory for Archaeological Science at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens that addresses substantive problems pertaining to the ancient Greek world and adjacent areas through the application of interdisciplinary methods in the archaeological sciences. Laboratory facilities are especially well equipped to support the study of human skeletal biology, archaeobiological remains (faunal and botanical), environmental studies, and geoarchaeology (particularly studies in human-landscape interactions and the study of site formation processes). Research projects utilizing other archaeological scientific approaches are also eligible for consideration, depending on the strength of the questions asked and the suitability of the plan for access to other equipment or resources available elsewhere in Greece.
Term: Three (3) years with the next term beginning early September 2020. It is expected that the applicant will maintain a physical presence at the Wiener Laboratory during each academic year (September to June 1).
Compensation: Stipend of $35,000 for 12 months. School fees are waived for fellow. Fellow pays room and board.

The main body of the proposal should be a clear statement of the research to be undertaken and must include:
- Objectives, Significance and Background: Briefly describe the project’s major goals and their impact on the state of the field and how the proposed work relates to the present state of knowledge and discuss the progress made on this research to date by the applicant.
- Research Description. Present a brief technical description of research plan for the overall research and a detailed presentation of what is to be accomplished during the tenure of the Research Associate appointment.
- A plan of how the research questions will be addressed throughout the proposed duration of the Research Associate appointment. Applicants should discuss how the tenure of this appointment will advance on-going research and include a plan of publication/dissemination of the results.
- Results of prior Wiener Laboratory Research. If the applicant has received Wiener Laboratory funding in the past, information on the prior award and its impact is required (half a page double spaced Times Roman 12pt).
- References cited
- Reference information is required. Each reference must include the names of all authors in the same sequence in which they appear in the publication, the article title, book or journal title, volume number, page numbers and year of publication. Proposers should be especially careful to follow accepted scholarly practices in providing citations for source materials relied upon when preparing any section of the proposal. While there is no established page limitation, this section should include bibliographic citations only and should not be used to provide parenthetical information outside of the 2-page project description.
- Facilities, equipment, and other resources. Describe the facilities that are required to do the research, including any specialized equipment that is not available in the Wiener Laboratory. Be specific about what resources you plan to use while at the Wiener Laboratory. If some experimental work will occur off-campus, explain how this will be achieved.
- Permits. Copies of permits(s) or letters from relevant authorities to study proposed materials, and copies of permission(s) from relevant excavation or project directors to study the proposed materials must be included in this application.
- Curriculum vitae including (in this order): Name and contact information; Educational history; Employment history; Short (50 word) description of research interests; Up to 5 publications related to current research; Up to 5 additional publications; Up to 10 presentations; Relative experience and other important activities (up to 250 words).

Library Long-Term Predoctoral Fellowships
The American Philosophical Society Library seeks applicants for one-year residential fellowships to assist in the completion of doctoral dissertation research in three areas of study. One fellowship will be awarded in each of these programs: the Center for Native American and Indigenous Research (CNAIR) Fellowship, the Friends of the APS Fellowship in Early American History (to 1840), and the History of Science, Technology, and Medicine Fellowship.
The program is designed for advanced Ph.D. students working toward the completion of the dissertation. Applicants whose research overlaps any of the three available categories may submit applications to all pertinent programs

Library Resident Research Fellowships
The Library Resident Research fellowships support research in the Society’s collections.
Applicants must demonstrate a need to work in the Society’s collections for a minimum of one month and a maximum of three months. Applicants in any relevant field of scholarship may apply. Candidates whose normal place of residence is farther away than a 75-mile radius of Philadelphia will be given some preference. Applicants do not need to hold the doctorate, although Ph.D. candidates must have passed their preliminary examinations.

Ivan Karp Doctoral Research Awards for African Students Enrolled in South African Ph.D. Programmes

The African Critical Inquiry Programme is pleased to announce the 2020 Ivan Karp Doctoral Research Awards to support African doctoral students in the humanities and humanistic social sciences who are enrolled at South African universities and conducting dissertation research on relevant topics. Grant amounts vary depending on research plans, with a maximum award of ZAR 40,000.
The African Critical Inquiry Programme (ACIP) seeks to advance inquiry and debate about the roles and practice of public culture, public cultural institutions, and public scholarship in shaping identities and society in Africa. The ACIP is committed to collaboration between scholars and the makers of culture/history, and to fostering inquiry into the politics of knowledge production, the relationships between the colonial/apartheid and the postcolonial/postapartheid, and the importance of critical pluralism as against nationalist discourse. ACIP is a partnership between the Centre for Humanities Research at the University of the Western Cape and the Laney Graduate School of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia (USA).
ELIGIBILITY: The Ivan Karp Doctoral Research Awards are open to African postgraduate students (regardless of citizenship) in the humanities and humanistic social sciences. Applicants must be currently registered in a Ph.D. programme in a South African university and be working on topics related to ACIP’s focus. Awards will support doctoral research projects focused on topics such as institutions of public culture, particular aspects of museums and exhibitions, forms and practices of public scholarship, culture and communication, and the theories, histories, and systems of thought that shape and illuminate public culture and public scholarship.
Applicants must submit a dissertation proposal that has been approved by their institution to confirm the award; this must be completed before they begin ACIP- supported on-site research or by December 2020, whichever comes first.
APPLICATION PROCESS: Awards are open to proposals working with a range of methodologies in the humanities and humanistic social sciences, including research in archives and collections, fieldwork, interviews, surveys, and quantitative data collection. Applicants are expected to write in clear, intelligible prose for a selection committee that is multi-disciplinary and cross-regional. Proposals should show thorough knowledge of the major concepts, theories, and methods in the applicant’s discipline and in other related fields and include a bibliography relevant to the research. Applicants should specify why an extended period of on-site research is essential to successfully complete the proposed doctoral dissertation. Referee letters should be submitted directly to the Selection Committee.
Funding is to be used for on-site dissertation research; research cannot be at the applicant’s home institution unless that institution has necessary site-specific research holdings not otherwise available to the applicant. Applicants who have completed significant funded dissertation research by the start of their proposed ACIP research may be ineligible to apply to extend research time. Eligibility will be at the discretion of the ACIP Selection Committee, depending on completed research time and funding. Please note that the Ivan Karp Doctoral Research Awards support dissertation research only and may not be used for dissertation write-up, tuition, study at other universities, conference participation, or to reimburse debts or expenses for research already completed. The programme does not accept applications from Ph.D. programmes in Law, Business, Medicine, Nursing, or Journalism, nor does it accept applications from doctoral programmes that do not lead to a Ph.D.
SELECTION PROCESS: Applications will be reviewed by the ACIP Selection Committee, an interdisciplinary group of scholars and practitioners drawn from a range of universities and cultural institutions. Selection will be based on the merit and strength of the application. Award amounts will vary according to project needs; the maximum award is ZAR 40,000. Awards will be made only if applications of high quality are received.
Notification of awards will be made by late July.
Successful applicants will be required to attend the African Critical Inquiry Workshop in the following year and will have opportunities to consult with scholars associated with the Workshop. They will be expected to attend subsequent ACIP Workshops while completing their dissertations, if possible. After completing their research, applicants must submit a final research report and a financial report.
Students who receive an Ivan Karp Doctoral Research Award from the African Critical Inquiry Programme must acknowledge the support in any publications resulting from the research and in their dissertation. When the dissertation is completed, they must deposit a copy with the African Critical Inquiry Programme at the Center for Humanities Research.
Closing date: Applications and referees’ letters must be received on or before Friday 1 May 2020. Incomplete applications and applications that do not conform to format guidelines will not be considered.

African Critical Inquiry Programme: Call for Proposals to Organise a Workshop

The African Critical Inquiry Programme invites proposals from scholars and/or practitioners in public cultural institutions in South Africa to organise a workshop to take place in 2021. The African Critical Inquiry Programme (ACIP) seeks to advance inquiry and debate about the roles and practice of public culture, public cultural institutions, and public scholarship in shaping identities and society in Africa. The ACIP is committed to collaboration between scholars and the makers of culture/ history, and to fostering inquiry into the politics of knowledge production, the relationships between the colonial/apartheid and the postcolonial/postapartheid, and the importance of critical pluralism as against nationalist discourse. ACIP is a partnership between the Centre for Humanities Research at the University of the Western Cape and the Laney Graduate School of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia (USA).
ACIP Workshops are intended as annual occasions to identify and address critical themes, fundamental questions and pressing practical issues concerning public culture. For instance, Workshops might focus on particular questions and issues related to publics, visuality, museums and exhibitions, art, performance, representational forms, or institutional forms from diverse methodological, practical, and theoretical vantages. They might examine forms and practices of public scholarship and the theories, histories, and systems of thought that shape and illuminate public culture and public scholarship. Workshops should encourage comparative, interdisciplinary and cross-institutional interchange and reflection that bring into conversation public scholarship in Africa, creative cultural production, and critical theory. Workshop budgets will vary depending on proposed plans; the maximum award is ZAR 60,000.
Workshop Themes and Formats: Working with a different focus each year, the ACIP Workshop will facilitate and energise conversations among scholars and practitioners drawn from universities, museums, and other cultural organisations, seeking to bridge institutional silos and boundaries. The ACIP Workshop should help place research and public scholarship within broader frames, work against institutional isolation, facilitate collaborative research relations and discussions, and build a cohort of scholars and practitioners who talk across fields, across generations, and across institutions. Proposed Workshops will be selected with an eye to cultivating these goals.
Proposed Workshop themes should focus on issues and questions that foster critical examination and debate about forms, practices, and institutions of public culture. Themes should be addressed from multiple orientations and disciplines and include comparative perspectives. Workshops should be planned to engage participants across different institutions of public culture, including universities, museums, arts and culture organisations, NGOs, or others appropriate to the topic. The Workshop might use a range of formats as appropriate. Examples of formats that might be proposed or combined:
- a standard workshop of 2-3 days, with specific sessions, presentations, discussants, pre-circulated papers or readings, etc. Variations on this format might also be introduced. Preferred timing for such workshops is March 2021.
- a working group of colleagues and postgraduate students drawn from across institutions that meet regularly over several weeks or months to discuss common readings and work in progress; visitors who work on the group’s central theme and issues might be invited to give public lectures, participate in group meetings, mentor students, etc.
- a collaborative teaching programme with a common postgraduate course, or module of a course, taught in parallel at different universities with various modes of coordination and interaction, with participants coming together for a 1 day workshop at the end.
- a distinguished scholar or cultural practitioner invited as a short-term Public Scholar in Residence (PSR) to bring fresh, comparative perspectives to particular issues and debates through public lectures, participation in a standard workshop, consultations with colleagues at institutions of public culture, and meetings with students supported by ACIP’s Ivan Karp Doctoral Research Awards. The visitor might also contribute to courses as appropriate.
Workshop organisers will work through the Centre for Humanities Research (CHR) at the University of the Western Cape for basic financial administration and are responsible for complying with CHR policies. Workshop organisers should submit a letter from the host institution, centre, programme, or department confirming that appropriate administrative and institutional support will be available.
We ask Workshop organisers to incorporate appropriate modes of participation for postgraduate students holding current Ivan Karp Doctoral Research Awards from ACIP so that they have opportunities to consult with Workshop participants. Prior holders of Ivan Karp awards may also wish to attend and we encourage organisers to include students from a range of higher education institutions.
Who Should Apply: Applications may be submitted by experienced scholars and cultural practitioners based in universities, museums, and other cultural organisations in South Africa who are interested in creating or reinvigorating interdisciplinary, cross-institutional engagement and understanding and who are committed to training the next generations of scholar-practitioners. Applications may be submitted by a single individual or a pair of individuals who have different institutional affiliations and bring different perspectives, approaches, or specialisations to the proposed Workshop theme.

- institutional letter of commitment to host the Workshop. Please describe available administrative and logistical support in this letter and/or your work plan
- two reference letters addressing the significance of the proposed Workshop and appropriateness of the format and plan should be submitted directly to the Selection Committee.
The Workshop theme description and plan of work should specify topics or sessions to be included, address the nature and value of the interdisciplinary and cross-institutional exchange to be undertaken, and indicate whether particular outcomes or products are envisioned. It should be written in a way that will be accessible to non-specialist reviewers.
Each Workshop may apply for up to ZAR 60,000. to support Workshop activities and planning. Applicants need not apply for the full amount. Funds may be used to pay honoraria, cover out of town participants’ travel costs, purchase materials, establish a website, promote Workshop activities, hire a student assistant to help with organisation, and cover other related expenses. Workshops are strongly encouraged to supplement the ACIP funding with other sources of support.
Selection Criteria: All proposals will be reviewed by the ACIP Selection Committee; successful applicants will be notified as soon as possible after the closing date so they may begin planning for the Workshop. Applications will be evaluated on the following criteria:
Conceptualisation: Does the proposed Workshop identify and address significant themes, questions, and issues concerning the roles and practices of public culture, public cultural institutions, and various forms of public scholarship in shaping identities and society in Africa? Does it combine disciplines and create cross-institutional conversations in new and/or interesting ways? How are comparative dimensions incorporated into the Workshop? How will the proposed Workshop develop cross-generational relations and conversations? Will the Workshop make possible new forms of knowledge, innovative approaches, or new kinds of exchange?
Appropriateness: Does the proposed Workshop theme relate to questions and issues relevant to African Critical Inquiry? Are the Workshop plan and proposed set of participants appropriate, well thought out, and likely to be productive?
Workshop organiser(s): What qualifications and experience do applicants bring to organising the Workshop, including previous administration/organisation and interdisciplinary and cross-institutional engagements? How do the training, backgrounds, and approaches of a pair of applicants complement one another in formulating Workshop plans?
Impact: Will the proposed Workshop and design be effective in addressing the theme and foster interdisciplinary, cross-institutional, and cross-generational debate and engagement?
Applicants who organise an African Critical Inquiry Programme Workshop must acknowledge the support in all Workshop materials and in any publications that result and indicate affiliation with ACIP and the Centre for Humanities Research.
After completing the workshop, they must submit a final report and a financial report.

Following the growth of the COMELA, The Conference on Mediterranean and European Linguistic Anthropology, we announce The COMELA 2020, September 2-5, 2020, at The American College of Greece, Athens, Greece.
The COMELA seeks to redefine scholarship on Mediterranean and European Language and Society.
Purpose and Structure
The COMELA 2020 invites academics in the fields of Linguistics, Anthropology, Linguistic and Cultural Anthropology, and Ethnology, pertinent to The Mediterranean and Europe, to discuss work, and engage in scholarly collaborations, thus strengthening global academic networks in the field.

Bounded Languages … Unbounded
Politics of identity are central to language change. Here, linguistic boundaries rise and fall, motivating the ephemeral characteristics of language communities. The Mediterranean and European region is one replete with histories, with power struggles, uniquely demarcating nation, ethnicity, and community. For this, cultural and political identities, language ideologies, as well as the languages themselves, have sought boundedness, dynamics of which have indeed sought change over eons, through demographic movements, through geopolitics, through technological innovation. In a current era of technological advancement, transnational fluidity, intellectual power, capitalism, and new sexualities, then, we question, once again, the boundedness of language and identity, and ways in which to unbound languages and ideologies. More than before, we now increasingly pursue anthropological toil, so to innovate ways to locate these ideologies and their fluid boundaries, actively. We now need to increasingly unbind these languages, and their ideologies, so to arrive at progressive realizations, and to rectify, or at least see and move past, the segregations of old.
The COMELA 2020 theme, “Bounded languages… Unbounded”, encapsulates the ongoing struggle throughout Mediterranean and European regions. As the continuous tension between demarcation, and the concurrent legitimization, of languages, language ideologies, and language identities, enters an era where new modes of interactivity require language communities to take on roles super-ordinate to the past, flexible citizenship now operates within, and not only across, language communities, to unbind languages, and to create new boundaries, unlike those ever seen throughout history.
The COMELA 2020 invites work which addresses the shifting boundedness of Language Communities of the Mediterranean and Europe. Papers and posters should acknowledge and describe processes of language shape, change, and ideology, pertinent to social, cultural, political histories, and futures of Mediterranean and European regions, and by those working in Mediterranean and European regions.

General session papers
- 18-word maximum title
- 400-word maximum abstract, including references
- Submission of only the main abstract for colloquium required
- Abstract must contain the colloquium main description, and a summary of each individual paper within the colloquium
Evaluation of proposals
- All abstracts for general sessions will be double blind reviewed.
- Main parent abstracts for colloquia will be double blind reviewed. All abstracts for individual presentations within each colloquia will not be peer reviewed, but are expected to be at a standard commensurate to the colloquium parent abstract.
Review of criteria are as follows:
- Appropriateness and significance to COMELA themes
- Originality/significance/impact of the research
- Clarity/coherence of research concerns
- Theoretical and analytical framework(s)
- Description of research, data collection, findings/conclusions, rhetoric, and exegesis as a whole
- For colloquia, importance/significance of the overarching topic and/or framework(s) addressed, and its coherence of and with individual presentations.
