In Anthropology News 62.3, the “Care” issue, we will tell stories that reveal the ways we provide and receive care in its many forms. What can anthropology tell us about the meaning and practice of care? How do individuals and communities care for one another in order to protect, survive, exclude, resist, or thrive? Whether your tale is about children as caregivers or palliative care or self-care apps, we want to hear it. Race, racism, and inequality in prenatal care? Certainly. The evolutionary benefits of friendliness? Yes, please. Your working life as a nurse anthropologist? Of course. A biocultural take on human generosity and cooperation? Tell us more. Compassion, parental care among bonobos, or communities of care in activist coalitions? You bet.

We are interested in pitches that approach care from an engaging perspective in the form of feature essays or visual essays.

Please send a 250-word pitch that outlines the story or argument of your piece, and a 50-word author bio to [email protected] by February 12, 2020. If proposing a photo or graphic essay, include one or two images or illustrations.

First drafts will be due by March 8 and will go through a developmental edit with the AN editor. Feature essays are 1,600–2,000 words. Photo essays comprise6–8 high resolution images and a 600-word introductory essay. Final articles will publish in the May/June print magazine and on the  AN website.
