The Society for Urban, National, and Transnational/Global Anthropology (SUNTA) is getting ready for the 2019 AAA Annual Meeting with several events and opportunities for our members and others interested in the work of the Society.
Business meeting
Join us for the business meeting on Friday November 22, 2019, 12:15 p.m.–1:45 p.m. in the Vancouver CC West, room 217. Come and hear about SUNTA’s activities this past year and plans for the next. Meet current and newly elected board members and see how you can become more involved. Celebrate with the winners of this year graduate student and undergraduate student papers awards. The highlights include the Anthony Leeds Book Prize and the Senior Scholar/Lifetime Award.
Reception
Later on Friday, SUNTA will once again host a joint reception with ABA, AFA, AfAA, ALLA, AQA, NASA, and SANA in the Pan Pacific Vancouver Hotel, Cypress Suite. The reception starts at 8:00 p.m. with a local DJ and refreshments. There will also be a cash bar. Come for a night of fun in Vancouver after a long day of conferencing!
“Latincouver” community engagement event
This year SUNTA’s local event, in partnership with ALLA, is a community engagement event, “Latincouver: Engaging Latinx Diasporic Communities and Organizations in Vancouver, BC.” It will be held offsite Thursday November 21, 2019 from 8:00 p.m.–11:00 p.m. at the Latin Plaza Hub, 406-68 Water Street. The event is designed to bring together scholars with local community organizations and the Latinx diaspora in Vancouver. Social and cultural issues will be discussed, as well as, a presentation of local artistic production aimed at empowering members of the community.
Mentoring
The SUNTA mentoring session will also take place on Thursday, November 21, from 4:15 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in Vancouver CC East, room 8. Students and early career anthropologists are welcome to attend, but need to register.
Late-Breaking Session on immigration
The Committee on Refugees and Immigration (CORI) will also have several events at the Annual Meeting. We are excited that a Late-Breaking Session has been accepted to addresses the current immigration situation. The session “CORI, Unsettling Changes in the United States Immigration Climate: Transborder Migrant Precarity and Collaborative Struggles for Justice” will be held on Friday, November 22, 2019 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. The panel is organized by Joe Wiltberger and Miranda Cady Hallett with Susan C. Bibler Coutin as discussant. Presenters include Wiltberger, Kathryn Garcia, Stephanie M. Huezo, Julie Mitchell, Emilia M. Guevara, and Catherine Whittaker. They will discuss the impact of the recent Trump administration policies regarding immigration enforcement. The panelists will highlight the experiences of immigrants who find themselves in limbo because of this sudden change in policy and how the new situation has triggered resistance movements across the country. These movements challenge the rhetoric of national belonging and deconstruct government’s policies to illustrate the injustice especially in how they are enforced in the United States.
Workshop
CORI will also offer a “Writing of the Public” workshop led by Chip Colwell, editor-in-chief of SAPIENS, Amanda Mascarelli, managing editor of SAPIENS, and Jeff Martin, the AAA’s director of communications and public affairs. The workshop will be held Saturday November 23, 2019, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. in Fairmont Waterfront Hotel on level 2 in the Princess Louis Room. Come and learn how scholarly work on migration and refugees can be re-interpreted for the general public. Register through the AAA website.
CORI meeeting
For those of you interested in action on refugees and immigration issues, the CORI meeting will also be on Saturday 2:00 p.m.–3:45 p.m. in Vancouver CC East , room 12.
SUNTA/CORI is excited by our strong presence at this year’s AAA Annual Meeting. In addition to the events above, there are several panels that call attention to important work on urban, transnational, and immigration topics. We look forward to seeing you in Vancouver!
