March Mammal Madness is a bracket-based tournament of empirically informed hypothetical encounters between animal “combatants” using social media, community events, and creative works to reach large and diverse audiences. Storytelling scientists craft accessible narratives from the scientific literature, citing over 1,250 scholarly works and featuring 450 taxa in tournaments since 2013. In 2020, Gorilla gorilla became the first primate champion, using splash displays, antipredator screams, and foraging displacement to “defeat” such worthy combatants as wolverine, sawfish, and hyena. Players learned about gorilla social behavior, habitat, nutrition, evolution, and conservation.
Charon Henning is art director for the annual March Mammal Madness tournament on social media and helps create science-based artwork to further the learning experience for participants. She is a member of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators, and certified through the Scientific Illustration Distance Learning Program.
