This piece was selected as a winner of the AAA’s AnthroDay Student Unessay Competition in the high school division. This year’s unessay competition focused on the topic of Technology and how it has impacted human life or society. Students were encouraged to think creatively about the topic and respond to the prompt in a format they see fit.

My name is Xinyu Zhou, and I am a Grade 11 student at United World College China, aspiring to be a visual anthropologist. I produced my first documentary, titled Tropical Fishes, about teenagers' struggle with the intergenerational gap in China. I'm obsessed with symbols, subcultures, and their intriguing interrelationships in every aspect of daily life.
