The Society for the Anthropology of Food and Nutrition announces its three annual student awards for research and writing. Due to the turmoil and confusion of the last few months, we have delayed the deadlines for all three awards. They are now due September 18, 2020.

Students who have written on the topic of food and nutrition are encouraged to apply for the Thomas Marchione Award and the Christine Wilson Award. Graduate students in the process of conducting research are encouraged to apply for the new Student Research Award. Details of each award are below as well as links to specific application details.

The Thomas Marchione Award

This award is for graduate students engaged in or having recently completed research related to food and human rights, food security, food justice, and related issues. Work in any field of study is eligible, and the winner will receive $750 and a year’s membership in both the American Anthropological Association (AAA) and Society for the Anthropology of Food and Nutrition (SAFN).

The Christine Wilson Award

This award is given to an undergraduate and graduate student for outstanding student research papers on food, nutrition, or both. The winner of the graduate award and the undergraduate award will receive $300 and be recognized at the annual meeting of the American Anthropological Association and receive a year’s membership in SAFN.

The Student Research Award

SAFN is pleased to announce a new award for 2020. The Student Research Award is open to all of our student members pursuing Masters or PhD degrees at accredited colleges or universities. The funding is intended to support the research phase of an original project focused on food and nutritional anthropology. Students from all four sub-fields of anthropology are encouraged to apply as well as from interdisciplinary fields that engage in anthropological methods and theory. It carries an award of $800.

Amanda Green is an assistant professor of anthropology at Eastern Kentucky University.
